ProQuest Dialog Advanced Search
- When you logon, you automatically enter Basic Search. Notice there are nine subject areas below the search box.
- Scroll over to the pharmaceutical/biomedical category and click the icon. Note you can search all the databases in the category or select one or more.
- Select a database from the list by scrolling down to locate the database of interest, in this example, MEDLINE. Review the description of the database and click Search.
- Since you want to conduct an Advanced Search, click the Advanced Search link at the top of the screen. Then select Advanced Search from the drop-down box.
- Start your Advanced Search by entering *toxic for left-hand truncation to pick up all forms of the word including the word with prefixes.
- Next, AND together the key word reproduce* ending with an asterisk. Notice you can choose other possible forms of the word from the drop-down box. Lastly, add a synonym genetic*. The synonyms are connected with the OR connector.
- Limit the search to human subjects by checking the Humans box and click Search.
- Search results display with the search strategy at the top of the screen. At the top of the screen the number of records is listed. Because of the large number you'll want to narrow your results.
- From the Narrow results by box on the right you can narrow our results in a number of different ways. Click the + sign in front of Document types to see the different types and click Review articles.
- Next, narrow by date by using the date histogram. Drag the slider to the date you want, in this example 2010, and click Update.
- The results are narrowed to 157 records. Scroll down to review the results and check the first four records you want to save in My Research.
- Scroll up to My Research at the top of the screen and notice four new documents are ready for My Research. Click the My Research link. Note if you have not set up your my Research account, you can do it now. (Learn how to set up your My Research account in the My Research module.)
- Sign in by entering your username and password and click Sign in.
- The four records you want to save in My Research are displayed. You can add notes to a record by clicking the Add notes icon, typing the note and clicking Save.
- You can also put records in a folder already created or create a new folder by clicking the Create folder link. Name the folder and its location and close the popup box.
- To end the session scroll to the bottom of the screen and click End session.
